Course Description
The aim of CHEM 101 is to develop an understanding of the fundamental principles of chemistry that are driving force for life and fueling the technological advancements that are happening at an astronomical pace. This exciting endeavor will be achieved by deciphering the concepts of quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, chemical equilibrium and organic reactions. More specifically, this course will cover the concepts related to: Atomic structure to understand basic composition of atoms, interactions and arrangement of atoms to form functional molecules and their three dimensional geometries; the role of orbital overlap to realize chemical bonding, nature of band structures in metals, semiconductors and insulators; the role of thermodynamics in determining different physical and chemical changes; concepts of rate of reaction, chemical equilibrium; and overview of the basic concepts of organic chemistry.
