FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT As more and more natural phenomena are being probed and mapped, scientists in genomics and proteomics are facing an exponentially growing volume of increasingly complex data. It is even more complex to extract information and knowledge out of it. This is particularly true for information related to genome function, i.e., molecular information represented by DNA and how this information affects the function of cell under different conditions. A fundamental challenge of functional genomics is to explore, analyze and interpret this information effectively and efficiently. To address this challenge, traditional statistical methods need to be complemented by methods from data mining, machine learning and artificial intelligence, and support technologies such as high-performance and parallel computing. The sheer volume of data generated by high-throughput technologies in genomics and proteomics like cDNA microarray gene expression present unprecedented challenges to the data analyst (a researcher, cancer clinician, computer scientist, molecular biologist, biostatisticians etc.). The aim of this workshop is to introduce the state-of-the-art of analytical methods to address key analysis tasks that data from functional genomics involves.
